Hey Sis,

I understand how important it is to have friends who look like you and share your culture. Being surrounded by people who have firsthand understanding of your experiences can be both comforting and empowering. However, I would also suggest broadening your circles beyond those who share your background.

Diversity broadens perspectives and connects people from various cultures and backgrounds. This allows people to gain new insights and perspectives. This will help you understand the world and appreciate all of the cultures living and thriving on it.

During my time in middle school, I surrounded myself with people who looked like me, but once I began my high school education, I became involved in various activities, particularly my school's publication. It wasn’t until then that I realized how important it is to have a diverse friend group and learn about different backgrounds. In doing so, it taught me that diversity allows us to understand new aspects of other people’s culture and appreciate one another.

Different cultures, different history, different traditions; we are all beautiful in our own way.

Building bridges between different walks of life helps negate stereotypes and foster mutual respect, which is a reason why diversity is so important in today's world. It provides an opportunity to learn about various experiences and challenges, which can foster empathy and solidarity.

I also want to note that it isn’t about replacing one group with another but expanding your life by including a number of different voices. You should primarily choose friends for their character, their values, and how you can grow and support one another.

Just make sure when searching for friends that align with your path that you don’t limit yourself to one demographic.

Your culture is your foundation - let it be strong and supportive. Once you have that strong cultural foundation, take the time to build bridges with other communities in a respectful way.

Stay true to yourself and keep learning.

Much love,

Your Friend, Meh’Quira
